Roots in South Yorkshire

Loam & Leaf began in a draughty potting shed off Matilda Street in Sheffield. We were frustrated by online gardening advice driven by sponsored seed packets and contradictory tips copied from different climates. Gardeners deserve plain facts tested on cool, damp soil.

We cultivate our own test beds across South Yorkshire to observe seed germination, disease resistance and compost performance firsthand. Every calendar note, seedling depth and feeding interval undergoes practical trials before appearing in our editorial columns.

Our journal remains completely independent of horticultural manufacturers and commercial nurseries. We do not accept payment for plant mentions, ensuring that every recommendation serves the gardener working on their allotment, windowsill or courtyard.

Field verification

We grow every plant variety mentioned in our guides on our Sheffield plots. If a crop fails our weather trials, we state so openly.

Commercial independence

Our writers accept no free samples or paid manufacturer sponsorships. Recommendations reflect honest garden trials.

Environmental stewardship

All practices avoid peat composts and synthetic systemic chemicals. Soil health remains our foundational priority.

We translate complex agronomy into calm guidance. Our garden plots in Sheffield test every technique before publication.
